Alright, I know that this is a tragic story and I don’t want to make light of anyone’s death, but as I was reading this, a cartoon came to mind. It was of Bugs Bunny and it was during world war II. He ended up being a “bomb tester”. He would hit each bomb with a hammer and when they didn’t blow up, he wrote “dud” on it.
Sorry, it was just what came to mind first!

It is just very difficult for me to understand that anyone would beat on any explosive device with a sledgehammer. BTW, I remember the cartoon.
