Your Teens Life Made Public
Here is a story that I ran across on news.com about teens and their use of blogs. I am just putting this here as a notification to parents about the teen blogging world so you can talk to your teen about making their life public. If you get a chance click on the link to the article at news.com . There are some parental suggestions listed there.

This is an excellent topic to raise awareness about.

Thanks for bringing this up! I, too, think that this is an excellent topic to raise awareness about. I read youth’s blogs and I wonder if they would write some of this stuff if they thought that they would be read by their youth minister or their parents! As I wrote in another comment, I think that the sense of anonimity (whether real or perceived) is a dangerous thing. If I had my way, probably a good thing that I don’t on most topics, I would make every parent read their children’s blogs. If nothing else, it would open their eyes to what they are dealing with and who they are under the mask.

The only thing I would disagree with would be in asking for their permission to read their website! It isn’t the same personal space issue as a diary, which I would also read if I thought there was a reason to. A personal journal or dairy is not open access for anyone in the world to read.
That feeling of anonymity can be a dangerous thing for any teenager currently under the influence of insane hormones and out of control emotions.

My daughter, now almost 16 has been blogging for a few years. Since she first began using the Net, we have and still do enforced very strict rules. I read her blogs, and have only had to ask her to edit one of the hundreds she has written. I read the blogs of other teens, and am frightened for their safety. Don’t parents remotely monitor the activites of their children? I am seeing that many don’t. Scary thought. Thanks for raising awareness.
